General Opinion Disclaimer, etc.
Here is where you'll find out if you think you'll like what I have to say.
See the About Me section to learn about your Movie Reviewer Mary.
As for my personal opinion of movies and the current film industry as a whole. I tend to think that in general movies have become too gory, violent and explicit. I believe that at times, a dramatic scene of violence, or a passionate love scene can make a film brilliant, when done appropriately and artistically. However, I feel most filmmakers have gone too far and put these scenes in their more films more frequently and with less taste just to make a dollar. This has most significantly affected the movie industry because not only has this tastelessness become rampant, but the audience has become completely immune to the power of such dramatic scenes and their meaning has been lost altogether. What would have once been considered groundbreaking is now old hat because the industry has prostituted this powerful cinematic device. These scenes can no longer have the impact they once did because everyone and their grandmother are getting shot in the head. I personally think that the up and coming filmmakers (possibly myself included) are going to make quiet a dent in the filmmaking history books because I think we are all seeing the downward spiral of the greater media and hope to make a positive change. I think that movies can be "good" again, and that we can perhaps bring back the magic that movies once had, but this can only be achieved with the right attitude and the right idea of what makes a movie "great", only time will tell if I am right in this assumption.
I of course do not blame this on the filmmaking industry alone. We as the audience are mostly at fault here. The industry is just that…an industry, their sole purpose is to make money and they are doing an excellent job at it. They know that stupid people flock in droves to see stupid movies, it is simple supply and demand, and I don’t blame them one bit, they are only doing their jobs. It is the audience that needs to make a change if the rate at which quality films are produced is to be increased. While there is nothing wrong with a silly comedy to relax with everyone once and a while, I think most of us should wait to rent it on video as to not encourage the mass production of American Pie one jillion! We need to be savvier with what we see and try harder to get something valuable out of every movie we are going to spend our hard earned dollars to watch. What that something may be however will change with every person, but as long as it’s meaningful to him or her then that movie must be of some quality. I am speaking mostly to my peers here, we have that darned “expendable income” that the marketers are just dying to have, so we must be the most careful as to not encourage this cinematic destruction. I see my job here trying to help you make better-informed decisions before you pay that $8 and send “Borat the Sequel” to #1 at the box office.
For Your Information: I do not see movies ahead of theater release. (Not that you probably thought I did) I'm just not that awesome I suppose. I try to go to the movies as often as possible, but if I do go it is usually not opening weekend and alas I am a poor college student so it doesn't happen as often as I would like. I do however get to view DVD's a few days before their street date. I work at a video store and they let us take them home in advance, so while I can't watch ALL of them in one weekend the liklihood that I will at least have seen one before it's Tuesday release is pretty good. My comments are only for pleasure I suppose, or for those who were wondering about a movie their friend recommended, or just looking for something good to watch. Nothing more. I am however always looking for movie suggestions. If you know of something you think I might like, please let me know. I'll watch almost anything once.
I DON'T WATCH HORROR MOVIES. IF YOU'RE LOOKING FOR HORROR MOVIE REVIEWS THIS IS NOT THE PLACE. I KNOW I'M A PANSY.
